What is compassion fatigue?

Compassion fatigue results from repeated exposure to the traumatic experiences of others (i.e., secondary, or vicarious, trauma). It is often seen among healthcare, criminal justice, non-profit, humanitarian, and other frontline sectors that regularly work with communities experiencing significant hardship. People who experience compassion fatigue report a range of emotional, cognitive, and physiological symptoms that can lead to burnout, turnover, cynicism, and reduced empathy.

My organization offers great benefits. Isn't that enough?

Comprehensive benefits go a long way towards safeguarding and supporting employees. At the same time, not all jobs are created equal. Depending on the nature of your organization's work, some professionals are faced with unique stressors in the workplace - think first responders and frontline workers, caregivers, healthcare providers, criminal legal professionals, and non-profit employees.

In these cases, individuals and organizations can benefit from additional specialized support to address unique challenges like compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout.

What's the benefit of this kind of investment in our staff's well-being?

It can be difficult to determine what company initiatives to prioritize and invest in. We won't sugercoat it - Rates of burnout and employee turnover are at historic highs following the COVID-19 pandemic, and global trends and conflicts continue to introduce elevated levels of stress in the workplace.

Per the World Health Organization, depression and anxiety results in an estimated loss of 12 billion working days and $1 trillion USD globally each year. Investing in your employees' well-being not only benefits them, but also strengthens your organization as a whole.
