What is evidence-based therapy?

Evidence-based therapy is backed by the latest scientific research, rigorous testing, and the clinical expertise of doctorate-level psychologists - in other words, we know that it works to address your specific set of needs. At the Center for Values-Based Living, our science-backed treatment plans are tailored to your unique experiences, identities, needs and goals to achieve better results and improve your overall well-being.

Question 2

The mental health space is overwhelming. How do I know which approach to take or what all of these different titles mean?

Mental health is gaining more visibility and traction, which is wonderful for reducing stigma, normalizing struggles, and increasing access to care. It also means that a lot of actors have rushed to fill the space. This can make it difficult to find the best fit for you.

Licensed clinical psychologists (PhD) on average have 5-7 years of formalized graduate education and training, with a focus on best practices in therapy, research, and ethics. We complete nearly 2,000 hours of clinical work under intensive supervision to earn a PhD and an additional 1,500 - 2,000 hours of supervised clinical work to earn our licenses. Even after licensure, clinical psychology is a highly regulated field, with accreditation, licensing boards, and required continuing education that hold us accountable to providing high-quality and ethical care - ultimately working to ensure that you are protected, respected, and ethically treated.

Question 3

What is the difference between evidence-based trauma treatment and trauma-informed care?

Trauma-informed care focuses on recognizing the impact of trauma on individuals' lives and working to create a safe space in therapy. This lens, and the accompanying skills, are important for fostering a good relationship and prioritizing client well-being. Trauma-informed care is not a treatment for trauma-related disorders.

In contrast, evidence-based trauma treatments are supported by rigorous research and are effective for treating PTSD. If provided by a trained expert, most clients no longer meet criteria for PTSD at the end of treatment. Although many trauma treatments have been popularized, the gold-standard, evidence-based treatments for PTSD are Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). Providers should be able to speak with you about the relative merits of these evidence-based approaches and how their offerings and training align.

What is the cost of sessions?

The initial intake appointment (lasting 60 minutes) costs $300. Subsequent session rates start at $250 per 50-minute session, consistent with industry standards for expert care from doctorate-level psychologists.

For clients who prefer longer sessions, the cost is prorated at 10-minute intervals. Limited extended hours (late evenings + weekends) are available as well.

Payment is due at the time of your session, and there is a 50% late-cancellation fee for sessions that are skipped or cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice.  All credit cards and HSA/FSA cards are accepted.

Can I use insurance?

CVB Living is out-of-network with all insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. However, many insurance plans provide partial reimbursement for out-of-network treatment, and we can provide "superbills" for you to submit with your reimbursement claims.

What can I expect during my first session?

Prior to your first session, you will be asked to complete intake paperwork through a secure, HIPAA-compliant client portal. Thank you for taking the time to share this information. Your therapist will review this paperwork prior to your first meeting so that you can focus on discussing more nuanced information and getting to know one another during your session. This comprehensive information about who you are, your experiences, and your goals will be used to thoughtfully create a science-backed treatment plan that is unique to you.

Because every person is different, your intake can take anywhere from 1-3 sessions. You will be kept in the loop regarding the process at every step of the way.

Question 8

What will the rest of our sessions be like?

After the intake and treatment plan have been completed, you will begin individual (1-on-1) therapy on a weekly or biweekly basis. CVB Living emphasizes a collaborative, strengths-based approach, in which which you are an active participant in your treatment.

Sessions will typically involve a mix of insight generation, skill-building, and problem-solving as you work with your therapist towards your goals. Evidence-based therapies also consist of practices that you engage in outside of therapy; this approach has proven to be most effective for creating long-term change. After all, the vast majority of your life takes place outside of sessions.

How long will I need therapy?

This answer will differ based on each client. Most evidence-based therapies require anywhere from 10-14 sessions to address discrete mental health symptoms and teach clients skills to carry forward beyond the end of therapy.

However, clients may have many areas of life that they hope to work on, and others value regular check-in's and ongoing support. For these individuals, therapy can be a longer-term relationship.
